The Official Word

November 13, 2013

Dear Parents:

Due to an ongoing statewide software issue, report cards for elementary students will be distributed by the week of November 25.

Pearson, the third-party software provider, is currently working to address the outage in its system, which has impacted teachers throughout the state. Once the system is restored, teachers will be able to continue to enter first-quarter grades, and schools will be able to print report cards.

We thank you for your patience as the software provider fixes the problem.

Your student’s teachers remain committed to keeping you informed regarding your child’s progress. If at any time you have questions regarding your child’s progress, please contact your child’s teacher.
Thank you,
Wake County Public School System

Queridos Padres:

Gracias,
El Sistema de las Escuelas Públicas del Condado Wake

Look for the Sign-Up Sheet!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Several of you have asked when we would have parent/teacher conferences. I have been waiting for the new statewide report cards to be ready before I met with everyone. However, the report card website is experiencing “technical difficulties”. Mrs. Dawes is putting the conference sign-up information in today’s OTIS folder. I look forward to meeting with everyone.

Thank you!

Teacher Appreciation

Mrs. Dawes and I wanted to say a big “thank you” for the lovely gifts, baked goods, and cards you gave us on the early release day. I am very happy to be a part of the Joyner family, and I appreciate all you do for the school, your child, and our classroom.

Letterland Day Parade!

Reminder!

The Letterland Parade is TOMORROW MORNING! (Wednesday, November 13) We are very excited about our program! If you have not helped your child get his/her costume together and an object to bring that he/she can show, time is running out. Please, make sure that your child is on time to school. We will start getting ready for the program promptly at 8:30. We look forward to seeing you in the gym tomorrow morning at 8:45.

End of First Quarter

Report Cards and Parent Conferences

The first quarter of the year has come to an end. In the past kindergarten parents have only had conferences with the teacher at this point. However, this year the state of North Carolina has launched a new data collection program known as PowerSchools. Along with the new program, kindergartners now receive a report card every nine weeks.
This is a good news/bad news proposition. The good news is that it will eventually give parents more information about how their children are doing in school. The bad news is that the PowerSchools program has had LOTS of issues, and the final kindergarten report card is a little more complicated than the Wake County report card in years past.

I would like to meet with all of the parents and explain the new report card and some of the assessment data from the very beginning of the school year collected during staggered entry. Next week, I will be sending home a conference sign up sheet in the OTIS folder. Please, choose three times that you would be available to meet with me. I try to be as accommodating as I can with working parents, but I also work a second job so my schedule is not always as flexible as I would like. I look forward to meeting with all of you soon.
